As a lover of character homes I’d always wanted to own a weatherboard. People had talked me out of it time and again for a variety of reasons. The maintenance, the threat of fire and white ants etc. For a long time these misgivings did influence my thinking, but after 10 years on the Gold Coast, where modernity is worshipped, I was ready for a change. I was more than over monolithic skyscrapers and resort styled homes. I wanted something authentic that I could get my teeth into.

After 6 months of looking to buy something in Perth, I found this 1990s beach house in a coastal suburb walking distance to the beach. It was perfect and I bought it without seeing it.
