Family Heirlooms

For years as I’ve travelled the world and through life, I have remained attached to a few tattered sheets of my grandmother’s sheet music. She used to play piano in a ragtime band and a piano in her living room was very much a feature of my childhood. My grandmother’s home was a sanctuary for in what was otherwise a fragmented and deeply traumatic childhood. From her I learned to sew, love roses and appreciate the garden. I tried to get her to teach me the piano but she said I was tone deaf. By using her music sheets in this series, which may or may not be enlarged, I wanted to honour her role in my childhood and also prove to her that music can be expressed in a variety of ways,
